MONTREAL - A Montreal area elementary school decided to cancel ‘Canadiens jersey day’ to avoid accommodating students wearing Boston Bruins jerseys.
Kids at the Honore-Mercier school in St. Leonard were excited to wear the jersey Tuesday and show support for the home team. When a couple of students, including an 11-year-old girl, showed up in Boston’s black and gold, they were told to take theirs off.
“My daughter is a Bruins maniac,” said the girl’s mom, who asked to remain anonymous so as to not draw more attention to her daughter.
The school decided that it would be easier to cancel the jersey day.
Mike Cohen, the spokesperson for the English Montreal School Board, told QMI Agency that he has never dealt with anything like this. “The rivalry between the two teams is strong,” Cohen said.
The Canadiens and Bruins are tied 2-2 in their second round playoff series. Game 5 is Saturday.
