DETROIT - Just when they need him most, could the Red Wings be getting their captain back in the lineup?

Henrik Zetterberg, was a full participant in the Red Wings’ practice Wednesday, the first time he has done so since prior to the Sochi Olympics, which he had to leave to have back surgery. He was involved in contact drills, leading to speculation that he would return for Game 4 here Thursday night.

“I’m still taking it day-to-day,” Zetterberg said. “Today was a good day. Hopefully I can get more of those in here. This was my first real practice with the team, on a line. Felt good.”

Red Wings coach Mike Babcock would not confirm or deny Zetterberg’s status, saying only that he replaced Pavel Datsyuk for drills. Datsyuk’s wife was having a baby.

“It felt good out there, but I’ve got to be cleared by the doctor,” Zetterberg said. “I’m just preparing myself to be better and (get in) better shape and try to get as much game-like situations as I can in practice.”

The Wings could obviously use their captain after falling into a 2-1 hole in the best-of-seven series when they lost 3-0 Tuesday night at Joe Louis Arena.

Before the playoffs began, Zetterberg had been targetting Round 2 as a possible return. Without him in the lineup, however, that might not be an option.
