Modano move a hard call for coach

Sitting out stars isn't easy for Mike Babcock.

But, the Detroit Red Wings coach told reporters before the puck was dropped Friday in Game 4 at the Joe Louis Arena, he has to do what's best for the team.

If that means sitting veteran Mike Modano, so be it.

"That's the hard, hard thing," Babcock said. "I've had Steve Yzerman here. I've had Brendan Shanahan. I've had Dominik Hasek. Dom at the end. I had (Chris Chelios) at the end. These are great people. First ballot Hall-of-Famers. It's a privilege to be around them and talk to them.

Babcock said he worked hard to convince Modano to join the Red Wings this season after the 40-year-old centre wasn't re-signed by the Dallas Stars.
"I recruited him hard," Babcock said.

If you go back to last summer at this time, we thought he was really going to be able to help our team. We didn't plan on the skate hitting his wrist (a severed tendon cost Modano half the season) and the way things went.

"So, does that make you think less of the guy? Absolutely not. Is this what he wanted or we wanted? No. Does it make it hard?

"We're going to try to do the right thing every day. I tell my kids that every day and I expect to do the same thing when I come to work."
