TAMPA - Lightning centre Steven Stamkos can’t wait to get his next text message from a coach who has had a profound influence on his young career.

While the Lightning were putting the finishing touches on the Capitals Tuesday, assistant coach Wayne Fleming was coming out of an eight-hour surgery to remove a brain tumour. The team learned that Fleming was alert and talking afterwards.

“I think we use it as inspiration,” Stamkos said. “Your thoughts are with him, but after every game he’s texting guys.

“For him to be battling through that knowing what him and his family are going through shows the type of person he is. That definitely trickles down to every player on this team.”
