BUFFALO -- Tyler Myers has just a wisp of a moustache and chin stubble that might develop into a beard if the Buffalo Sabres still are playing hockey in June.

But the towering Sabres defenceman swears he has a mean streak, one that has been coming along since he broke into the NHL last season and won the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year.

"I think I can get mean when I want to," the 6-foot-8, 227-pound Myers said. "It takes quite a bit to get me going. If the opportunity comes up, I will try to be physical without taking penalties."

The 2010-11 season for Myers was not one without struggles. With top rookie honours on his resume, Myers stumbled during the first few months and acknowledged it took a mental toll. But he got through the difficulties and now has emerged as the Sabres' top defenceman in the Eastern Conference quarterfinal versus the Philadelphia Flyers.

"He has ramped up his emotion," Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said. "Last year he got a taste (of the playoffs) and this year he has ramped up the aggressive play. He is well on his way to being the complete package."
