One of the most controversial plays in the Detroit Red Wings' first-round series with the Phoenix Coyotes has Mike Babcock and Johan Franzen on different pages.

In the first period of Game 2, Coyotes captain Shane Doan and Wings forward Johan Franzen collided near the boards. Franzen was off balance and got the worst of it, flying head first into the boards. He was gone for almost a period getting stitched and being checked for a concussion.

"I don't know why he was still in the game," Franzen said of Doan. "He shouldn't be in the game. The (defence) got me with the stick and then he hit me on my numbers. One cut was from the D's stick and one cut was from the boards. He hit me from behind, and they missed it somehow. He (the official) could have picked charging, boarding, whatever, pretty much."

No so, said the Wings coach.

"Franzen toepicked and Doan had kind of bumped him," Babcock said. "In my opinion, no penalty."

When Franzen returned, he and Doan went off for roughing after rubbing each other's faces.

Look for more to come in Phoenix.
