 Quinn ponders 'basher' calls

Pat Quinn weighed into the composite stick issue again yesterday, with regard to "basher" or "destroyer" sticks some NHL players are supposedly using to break the lighter stick of an opponent.

"The league has been telling us some guys play with basher sticks and they're going to penalize guys they think might have a basher stick," the Maple Leafs coach said.

"I don't think we've figured it out very well. If you knocked a guy's stick 25 years's ago, it was the velocity or the force that the referee judged for a penalty, not if it broke the other guy's stick. Now you can't tell."

The Leafs were outraged in Game 1 against the Ottawa Senators when Bryan McCabe was called for breaking Marian Hossa's stick, on what seemed like a routine chip shot.

But the league had warned all 16 teams before the series that they would call such penalties, because the victimized players had been rendered useless without a stick.

 NOLAN PROGRESSING

Owen Nolan's limp is almost gone in his right knee, but it has progressed enough that he can do some upper-body exercises.

"I guess all you can say is that I'm ahead of schedule," Nolan said yesterday, two weeks to the day he suffered suspected ligament damage in a game against the Senators.

"Maybe I can tell you more next week (he will get a medical update Thursday when the club returns from Ottawa), but even I don't know right now."

 LOSING HIS COOL

Alex Mogilny couldn't believe he was called for hooking in the second period when his stick got caught in Todd White's arm pit. White was whistled for diving.

"I almost fainted out there," Mogilny said. "I just let the stick go and said 'Please take it.' It made the referee look bad. It was pathetic."

Mogilny screamed at the referee and it was suggested that was not befitting of a Lady Byng Trophy winner. Mogilny won it last year.

"It's going back," Mogilny said with a laugh. "It's in the box."
