Local sports broadcaster Don "Dandyman" Romani will not return to The Team 1200 following a suspension earlier this month, the radio station said yesterday.

Assistant program director Dave Mitchell couldn't say whether an offer to return was extended to the longtime broadcaster, but noted the decision was made by Romani and that the parties agreed it was in both of their best interests.

"He's decided to spend time with family," Mitchell said. "People who know Don know how he loves to fish. This gives him the opportunity to do that."

 SUSPENDED FOR REMARKS

Romani was suspended from the station after making disparaging on-air remarks about Maple Leafs winger Tie Domi and his wife Leanne on the eve of the Senators' first-round playoff matchup vs. Toronto.

Referring to Domi's wife during a broadcast of the Afternoon Drive With Dandy and Buzz, Romani said: "One would suspect that she could take a good punch."

He later added: "I'll bet you (Domi's) idea of aerobics is to bang her around a bit once a week."

Mitchell said guidelines exist to deal with such situations and that suspending Romani was consistent with those rules.

While the station has no immediate plans to replace Romani, Mitchell said it would be looking for a suitable replacement eventually.

Romani spent three years hosting a weeknight sports show on CFRA before moving to The Team 1200 in 1999.

He refused to comment on the decision when reached at his home yesterday.
