 FIRST PERIOD:

Detroit winger Kirk Maltby gets the visitors off to a fast start, beating Flames goalie Miikka Kiprusoff with a shot from the slot just 26 seconds into the contest.

Kiprusoff then stones Tomas Holmstrom, kicking out his right pad to redirect his slapshot from close range just three minutes later.

The Flames gather the rebound and race the length of the ice, setting up Chuck Kobasew's slapshot from the top of the right circle that Wings goalie Curtis Joseph grabs with his glove.

Kiprusoff also stops Detroit winger Henrik Zetterberg from close range as the Wings continue applying early pressure, outshooting the Flames 8-2 through 10 minutes.

Wings defenceman Mathieu Dandenault dumps Flames winger Shean Donovan as he reaches for a loose puck in front of Detroit's net but no call is made.

Minutes later, Donovan is again dumped in front of Cujo by Zetterberg and the Flames go on the powerplay. Although they can't solve Joseph with the man advantage, the Flames generate some momentum with a handful of quality chances, including a loose rebound Jarome Iginla fails to poke behind Joseph.

 * FIRST-PERIOD STAR: Kirk Maltby, Detroit.

 SECOND PERIOD:

Detroit defenceman Boyd Devereaux threads the needle through traffic with a point shot, eluding Miikka Kiprusoff for a 2-0 lead three minutes into the period.

Craig Conroy wins the faceoff five minutes in, Jarome Iginla can't bury the rebound but Martin Gelinas does to get the Flames back in the game.

Seconds later, Ville Nieminen has all day bobbing and weaving with the puck in front of Curtis Joseph before backhanding the biscuit behind the Wings goalie to tie the game, drawing the first cow tongue toss of the series from the stands.

Nieminen again breaks out on a two-on-one eight minutes in, feeding Shean Donovan with a perfect pass through the slot but Joseph slides across his crease making a glove save with his pads stacked.

Wings defenceman Nicklas Lidstrom hauls down Iginla on a partial breakaway, drawing a hooking penalty for the Flames' second powerplay.

Iginla gets the best chance with the man advantage, almost beating Joseph with a low wrist-shot to the far corner.

 * SECOND-PERIOD STAR: Ville Nieminen, Calgary.

 THIRD PERIOD:

Flames defenceman Steve Montador gets the team's best chance to take the lead six minutes in with a quick wrist-shot but Curtis Joseph makes a blocker save.

With the period eight minutes old, Wings centre Pavel Datsyuk wins the draw back to Brett Hull, who fires a one-timer into Miikka Kiprusoff's glove.

On the same shift, Datsyuk fires a pass through the slot to Hull who can't find the handle looking at the open side of the net.

At the midway point, Wings' Tomas Holmstrom's shot from close range beats Kiprusoff through the legs before Mathieu Dandenault chips in the loose puck as Detroit opens a 3-2 lead.

At the 12-minute mark, Flames right-winger Jarome Iginla breaks loose in the Wings slot looking for the tying goal, firing a wrister off the side of the net.

The Flames pressure the Wings in the final couple of minutes, pulling Kiprusoff with 1:03 remaining but Henrik Zetterberg scores into the empty cage with 24 seconds remaining.

 * THIRD-PERIOD STAR: Pavel Datsyuk, Detroit.
