Game Over

SCOTT FISHER -- Calgary Sun

, Last Updated: 3:29 PM ET

 SUN THREE STARS:

 1. MARTIN GELINAS, Flames.

 2. CURTIS JOSEPH, Red Wings.

 3. MIIKKA KIPRUSOFF, Flames.

 TURNING POINT:

Martin Gelinas banged home the winner with 47 seconds remaining in the first OT period, igniting the Saddledome crowd.

 SAVE OF THE GAME:

Wings 'tender Curtis Joseph made a pair of beauties early in the third period to keep the game scoreless. With the Flames on the powerplay, D Andrew Ference pinched in from the point and redirected a shot that Cujo somehow got a pad on. Seconds later, he made a big blocker stop on Oleg Saprykin.

 HIT OF THE GAME:

Detroit D Derian Hatcher, already despised by the Sea of Red because of his Game 2 fight with Jarome Iginla, further solidified his nasty reputation. The 6-ft. 5-in., 235-pounder caught rookie Matthew Lombardi with a big elbow with 4:03 to play in the opening period. Lombardi went to the dressing room but returned in the second frame.

 HARDEST WORKER:

Flames F Oleg Saprykin has been hot and cold throughout the series. He was firing on all cylinders last night, creating a number of dangerous opportunities and even throwing a bodycheck on the much larger Derian Hatcher.

 FIGHT CARD:

 None.

 SCRATCHES:

FLAMES -- LW Chris Simon (lower body) and D Toni Lydman (concussion) are day-to-day. D Denis Gauthier (knee) and LW Lynn Loyns (ankle) are out indefinitely. C Steve Reinprecht (shoulder) and C Dean McAmmond (back) are both out for the season. Healthy scratches included LW Krzysztof Oliwa, D Brennan Evans, LW Martin Sonnenberg and G Brent Krahn.

RED WINGS -- D Chris Chelios (upper body) is out day-to-day. RW Mark Mowers (foot) is doubtful for the series, while C Steve Yzerman (face surgery) is out indefinitely. G Dominik Hasek (groin) is out for the season. D Jiri Fischer, C Boyd Devereaux, C Jiri Hudler, D Niklas Kronvall and G Marc Lamothe drew the short straws.

 WHAT IT MEANS:

The Flames advance to the Western Conference final against the winner of the San Jose/Colorado series.

 NOTEWORTHY:

The Flames and Wings have combined for a total of one goal in six first-periods in the series ... Wings D Mathieu Dandenault left the game midway through the first after being clipped by teammate Brendan Shanahan's skate. He returned in the second stanza after receiving stitches ... With C Steve Yzerman on the sidelines recovering from a serious facial injury, Red Wings coach Dave Lewis handed an additional 'A' to Kris Draper.
