After Darren McCarty's backhand is handled by Miikka Kiprusoff, Jarome Iginla gives the Flames their second scoring opportunity but is tied up in front of the Detroit net.
Four minutes in, Flames winger Martin Gelinas races over the blueline and lets a slapshot fly from the top of the circle that Joseph turns aside.
With the game six-minutes old, Chuck Kobasew leads a Flames three-on-two and feeds a pass to Matthew Lombardi, who hits the side of the net to Joseph's glove-hand side, setting off a roar from fans behind the Detroit cage thinking Calgary was on the board.

At the eight-minute mark, Detroit's Brendan Shanahan slickly plays the puck off the boards and skates in from the corner, attempting to slip the puck through Miikka Kiprusoff's legs, but the Flames goalie closes the door. Seconds later, Wings centre Kris Draper cruises into the slot but is again turned aside by Kiprusoff.
At 9:52, Flames captain Jarome Iginla is called for holding the sweater of Wings defenceman Mathieu Schneider, signalling the Wings' second powerplay. Tomas Holmstrom misfires from the top of the paint on a perfect pass from the corner.
Coincidental minors to Robyn Regehr and Kirk Maltby triggers a four-on-four. Flames d-man Andrew Ference has the best opportunity, a slapshot from just inside Detroit's blueline but Joseph is equal to the test.

Wings forward Ray Whitney is penalized for hooking Flames winger Martin Gelinas 90 seconds into the period, setting up great scoring chances by Andrew Ference and Oleg Saprykin.
Ference, racing in from the point, deflects a point shot that Wings goalie Curtis Joseph is quick to stop.
At the 11-minute mark, Jarome Iginla fires a shot at Joseph from close range and linemate Gelinas is hauled down in the slot by Nicklas Lidstrom, preventing him from burying the rebound and drawing a penalty.
Iginla has the best chance with the man-advantage, stepping over the blueline and firing a slapshot just wide of the far corner.
With four minutes remaining, Kris Draper almost fools a screened Miikka Kiprusoff with a soft wrist shot that rolls just past the open corner.

At the seven-minute mark, Warrener's point shot is deflected into the slot where Matthew Lombardi fires a shot that appears to hit Joseph in the mask.
At the midway point, Flames winger Chris Clark hits Joseph in the mask with a wrister from the top of the circle.
Moments later, Flames winger Martin Gelinas feeds a pass through the slot to Warrener, racing in from the point, but the defenceman can't redirect the puck past Joseph.
With four minutes remaining, Kris Draper breaks down the right wing and tries to beat Kiprusoff five-hole but the Flames goalie slams the door again.
Seconds later, Gelinas bangs home a rebound from the edge of the crease to win the game.
