Chuck Kobasew could be demonstrating his versatility again today, moving to centre for Game 1 of the Western Conference final in San Jose.

Detroit defenceman Derian Hatcher's vicious elbow to the head of Flames centre Matthew Lombardi in Game 6 of the conference semifinal last Monday could force Kobasew to move from his natural right-wing position to centre.

"I'll play wherever," Kobasew said after yesterday's Saddledome skate, the third consecutive day Lombardi has been unable to work out due to a suspected concussion.

"I don't know what (Lombardi's) status is. Whatever the situation is, anytime, if they want me there, I'll play."

Lombardi left the Detroit game late in the first period but returned for the final 40 minutes and overtime.

Kobasew participated yesterday in line rushes with wingers Dave Lowry and Oleg Saprykin.

"We've got guys who are versatile," pointed out Kobasew, 21, in his first full season in Calgary.

"(Marcus) Nilson's been all over the place this year. He's been left side, centre, different positions on the powerplay.

"Guys are willing to play wherever."
