 FIRST PERIOD:

Flames RW Chuck Kobasew gets the first good scoring opportunity of the game after intercepting a clearing attempt at the San Jose blueline. Sharks G Evgeni Nabokov stops the slot shot with his right leg.

Five minutes in, Sharks RW Todd Harvey fires a high shot from the slot that goes off the shaft of Flames G Miikka Kiprusoff's goal stick and wide of the net.

With Flames D Mike Commodore in the penalty box, Calgary RW Jarome Iginla intercepts a pass at the Flames blueline, outraces two Sharks and beats a sprawling Nabokov with an easy backhand deke to open the scoring at 6:27.

The Sharks bounce back, nearly scoring on a shot that gets behind Kiprusoff, who flops backwards to fall on the puck and keep it from trickling over the line.

Moments later, Flames LW Ville Nieminen gets hooked on a rush, draws a penalty but maintains control of the puck. He circles back and feeds C Marcus Nilson, who rifles it past Nabokov for a two-goal lead at 8:29.

The Sharks mount a counter-attack, when LW Alexander Korolyuk's wrist-shot redirects off a defenceman, hits the crossbar and trickles out the other side behind Kiprusoff. The goalie tries to swipe the puck out of harm's way but the rubber hits Flames D Jordan Leopold's skate and wobbles wide of the post.

A few minutes later, Sharks C Alyn McCauley tries to one-time Harvey's centring pass from behind the net but Kiprusoff is there to make the crucial save.

On the game's first powerplay, with Sharks D Scott Hannan off for interference, Flames C Craig Conroy blasts a shot that hits Nabokov's glove and the crossbar.

 * FIRST-PERIOD STAR: Jarome Iginla, Flames.

 SECOND PERIOD

Sharks C Patrick Marleau gets the first chance of the period when he jumps in over the Flames blueline and snaps a shot that G Miikka Kiprusoff gets in front of to stop.

Sharks RW Jonathan Cheechoo gets the next chance when he drives in off the left-wing boards and snaps a hard shot that Kiprusoff juggles with the glove.

Midway through the period, Flames C Stephane Yelle gets three chances while buzzing both sides of the net but Sharks G Evgeni Nabokov stands his ground.

Minutes later, Sharks D Kyle McLaren gets caught on a pinch, sending Flames C Craig Conroy and RW Jarome Iginla away on a 2-on-1. Conroy goes to the net and makes a forehand deke for the Flames' third goal of the game at 12:47.

The Sharks finally get a good chance to get on the board with just over six minutes remaining in the middle frame but Cheechoo's hot shot goes wide and Kiprusoff makes a save while on his side off D Brad Stuart's bad-angle blast.

The Sharks go on the powerplay with Flames LW Martin Gelinas off for hooking and Sharks C Wayne Primeau tries a wraparound that Kiprusoff stuffs easily.

 * SECOND-PERIOD STAR: Craig Conroy, Flames.

 THIRD PERIOD

It takes a while for any solid chances to arise in the final frame. When one does, Sharks D Kyle McLaren's shot goes past traffic and wide of the net after he pinches in to intercept a Flames clearing attempt.

The Sharks get another couple of long wrist-shots from RW Jonathan Cheechoo and C Patrick Marleau that prove harmless.

The Flames follow with a couple of odd-man rushes, as LW Chris Simon gets a shot off that sails wide on the first dash and LW Martin Gelinas is stopped by G Evgeni Nabokov on the second. On that play, RW Todd Harvey gets a penalty after he cross-checks Gelinas in the face while Gelinas is down on all fours sliding. Also down is Nabokov after Gelinas inadvertantly bumps him while driving the net.

Cheechoo generates another Sharks chance but G Miikka Kiprusoff takes away the long backhand opportunity. The Sharks try to mount a late comeback when Harvey gets a shot off that Kiprusoff again swats away with this stick.

 * THIRD-PERIOD STAR: Stephane Yelle, Flames.
