The Lightning fires out of the gate quickly and gets the first scoring opportunity, a quick shot by LW Ruslan Fedotenko that G Miikka Kiprusoff stops with his leg pad.
Bolts LW Andre Roy is called for interference on Flames LW Oleg Saprykin. On the man-advantage, Flames LW Chris Simon nearly fools G Nikolai Khabibulin through the legs.
At 7:10, Fedotenko pokes home his own rebound to cap a brilliant offensive assault by the Lightning for the first goal of the game. On the flurry, Bolts C Vincent Lecavalier makes an off-the-back-of-the-net drop pass to himself and, moments later, makes a perfect cross-ice pass to point-man Jassen Cullimore, who gets the initial shot on the Flames net.
With Flames LW Dave Lowry off for hooking Lecavalier, the Lightning nearly made it 2-0 on RW Dave Andreychuk's shot from beside the net that Kiprusoff stuffs with his short-side skate. At the other end, LW Ville Nieminen beats D Pavel Kubina to a dump-in and gets a shorthanded chance Khabibulin takes away.
The Flames get their third powerplay when Lecavalier goes off for massaging the face of RW Shean Donovan with his stick. The Flames get just one good shot -- D Andrew Ference's slapper from the point that Khabibulin grabs through traffic.
Donovan is tagged for holding but the Bolts' powerplay can't convert despite a LW Cory Stillman point-blast that hits Kiprusoff's mask.
The Flames get their fourth powerplay when the Lightning is penalized for too many men. But the man advantage is killed and a period plagued by penalties mercifully ends.
* FIRST-PERIOD STAR: C Vincent Lecavalier, Lightning.
The parade to the penalty box continues 53 seconds into the middle frame, when Bolts LW Fredrik Modin is sent off for hooking RW Jarome Iginla in the neutral zone. On their fifth powerplay of the night, Iginla gets a one-time shot away from the high slot that G Nikolai Khabibulin sees clearly and steers away from harm.
Moments later, Bolts C Brad Richards blocks D Steve Montador's point shot and races away on a breakaway but is stopped by G Miikka Kiprusoff on a gorgeous glove save.
Midway through the period, Flames C Marcus Nilson centres for LW Ville Nieminen on a rush but Khabibulin breaks up the feed.
With three minutes left, D Brad Lukowich gives away the puck in his own zone where RW Chris Clark walks in but has his stick lifted.
The play goes the other way, where Bolts LW Dave Andreychuk is stopped on a wraparound chance and C Tim Taylor can't chip in the rebound.
* SECOND-PERIOD STAR: G Miikka Kiprusoff, Flames.
The Lightning starts the final frame on the powerplay and gets a two-man advantage for 46 seconds when C Stephane Yelle cross-checks RW Martin St. Louis into the net.
While the Flames kill off the threat, the Lightning continues to press and finally scores when C Brad Richards bangs in a loose puck in front of G Miikka Kiprusoff at the 2:51 mark.
The hosts strike again just one minute later when C Brad Richards throws a pass in front that is tipped in by D Dan Boyle.
Just 69 seconds later, Boyle pinches in again to get another glorious chance but his initial shot and a rebound by LW Freddy Modin are stopped by Kiprusoff. The subsequent scrum in Kiprusoff's crease results in a brouhaha that features D Andrew Ference beating up LW Cory Stillman.
The skirmish puts the Lightning on another two-man powerplay and just seconds into it, C Vincent Lecavalier slides a centring pass to St. Louis, who redirects the puck past Kiprusoff for the Lightning's fourth goal at 5:58.
A few minutes later, LW Chris Simon and RW Andre Roy drop the mitts after Kiprusoff is knocked down.
With 7:24 left, LW Ville Nieminen picks up a loose puck in the high slot and snaps a short-side shot by G Nikolai Khabibulin for Calgary's lone goal.
* THIRD PERIOD STAR: C Brad Richards, Lightning.
