Finally a Champ

No longer will Dave Andreychuk hold the dubious distinction of being the NHL player to have played the most games without winning a Stanley Cup.

The Tampa Bay Lightning captain not only carried the Cup yesterday, he kissed it.

"You dream about this day," he said. "It has taken me a while to get to this point, and I don't believe you can put into words the things that are going through your mind.

"The years that you got knocked out in the first round. The years that you didn't make the playoffs. All the players that you have played with."

Andreychuk came to the Lightning as a scorer. He converted his game into that of a solid two-way player -- but still cracked the 20-goal barrier. And he gave the team some leadership. He could have moved on at last year's trading deadline and had a chance to win a Cup elsewhere, but he chose to stay with the Lightning.

 Will he retire now?

"I am going to savour this moment," he said. "This is going to last a while. Then I will make a decision then, but obviously, this is the pinnacle. This is what we play for and it has taken me a while to get here, so I am going to wait and see what happens."
