They’re calling them “The Travelling Wilkes-Barres.”

The Pittsburgh Penguins have had their top four defencemen - Kris Letang, Brooks Orpik, Paul Martin and Matt Niskanen - together for less than four periods this season.

They’ve been playing - and winning - with a steady stream of contributors from their Wilkes Barre/Scranton Penguins farm team in the American Hockey League and a 19-year-old defenceman playing top two minutes.

The Penguins went into their game against the Ottawa Senators Monday night riding a seven-game winning streak.

They are up 13 points on the Washington Capitals for top spot in the Metropolitain Division.

Okay, so given they play in the Metropolitain Division, I know a bunch of you are thinking, “it’s as close to the AHL as you can get in the NHL, so winning with five AHL defencemen is no big deal.”
