Malkin ahead of schedule in rehab
By QMI Agency

Good news Pens fans.

Evgeni Malkin should be fine when training camp rolls around.

Malkin, who tore ligaments in his right knee after crashing into the boards in February, appears to be ahead of schedule in his recovery. According to Sovetsky Sport, quoting Malkin's father, the high-scoring forward has apparently started skating in Moscow and probably won't take a break before training camp.

"Evgeni is seriously focused. I am not even sure he will vacation somewhere this summer. He wants to approach the start of the NHL season in top form," Vladimir Malkin told the Russian-language newspaper.

Pens ink Johnson

The Pittsburgh Penguins re-signed forward Nick Johnson to a one-year, two-way contract Saturday.

Johnson, a third-round pick of the Penguins in 2004, will make $550,000 at the NHL level. He played for games with Pittsburgh this season before suffering a concussion that ended his season early, recording one goal and two assists.

In 48 games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL this season, Johnson had 20 goals and 19 assists.
