Students at NHL superstar Sidney Crosby's former elementary school have met the new RCMP puppy that is now his namesake.
The Grade 6 class at Colby Village Elementary School in Cole Harbour, N.S., submitted the name Crosby to the RCMP Name the Puppies contest earlier this year.
The annual contest was looking to name the litter with C names for 2010.
"The students submitted the name Crosby in recognition of a special student and now famous NHL hockey player who attended the elementary school," police said in a release.
The students said the name Crosby is of national significance.
The 11-week-old German shepherd pup visited the school on Monday. The class also received a picture of the puppy and a certificate.
The RCMP wanted to introduce "the force's newest officer" to the class, police said.
A record 9,125 entries were submitted to this year's name contest. Ten names were selected.
