HALIFAX - Pittsburgh Penguins superstar Sidney Crosby has added another award to his sizable collection - the Order of Nova Scotia.

Crosby received a medallion emblematic of joining the order during a ceremony Tuesday at Province House.

The province named him a recipient last September, but he was unable to attend the October ceremony because the NHL season had begun.

Only 22, Crosby is the youngest person to ever receive the honour.

A native of Cole Harbour, N.S., Crosby is a former winner of the Art Ross Trophy as the league's top scorer and Hart Memorial Trophy as its most valuable player.

In June, he captained the Penguins to a Stanley Cup championship.

Crosby said getting the award from his home province means a lot.

"It's special," he said after the private ceremony. "Hockey has taken me elsewhere outside the province, but I have family and friends back here and every time I get the opportunity, I'm proud to say I'm from here and Cole Harbour, so it means a lot to be recognized like this."

Premier Darrell Dexter said the Order of Nova Scotia recognizes people who have contributed to the province in an extraordinary way in their chosen discipline.

"He's an extraordinary young man who has accomplished an extraordinary number of things in a young life," Dexter said. "Every time he presents himself, he presents himself in a way that makes us proud as a province."

Crosby's parents, sister, and two grandmothers joined him at the ceremony.
