Playing it straight

PITTSBURGH -- Sidney Crosby would like to play in every NHL city, every year.

"I'd like to have a chance to go everywhere, especially as a rookie," said Sid the Kid after practice with the Pittsburgh Penguins yesterday.

Tonight Crosby and the Penguins meet the Edmonton Oilers for the only time this season.

With the exception of a few blocks to the rink in St. Louis, he will not play west of the Mississippi River this season. Next year, if the NHL sticks with the "rivalry" format where each team only plays 10 crossover games against teams from the other conference, Crosby will play away games in either the Northwest Division or the Pacific Division.

In his first year in the league this year - with Wayne Gretzky also coaching in his first year in Phoenix - the NHL doesn't have a game with The Great One's team going against the player many expect to take Gretzky's place as the ultimate star and spokesman for the sport.

"I guess it depends on where you are," said Crosby. "I can't complain about it a whole lot. It's the way it is."
