Sid the Kid could be coming to Ottawa this weekend.

Organizers of the Hockey Stars for Hope charity tournament are working on bringing Sidney Crosby to the event, which begins tonight at Robert Guertin Centre in Gatineau.

"We'd love to have him here," said event chairman Shawn Allard. "We're keeping our fingers crossed, because it's obvious what a player like him would do for our fundraising efforts."

Proceeds from the tourney go to a help fund equipment purchases for kids who normally wouldn't be able to afford to play minor hockey.

The Gatineau and Ottawa minor hockey associations will receive funds from the weekend's event.

Organizers said they received the blessing of Pat Brisson, Crosby's agent, to contact the player about participating in the non-contact tournament.

They don't think he'll be able to arrive in time for tonight's opening games, but hope Crosby could get here for Saturday's final day.

The 18-year-old centre, who spent the last two seasons tearing up the QMJHL with the Rimouski Oceanic, is skating at his former junior team's training camp this week.

The Pittsburgh Penguins selected him first overall during last month's NHL draft in Ottawa.

Allard said some of the other players in the tournament are trying to talk Crosby into coming.

A collection of NHL players, including Senators centre Mike Fisher and Avalanche winger Brad May, will participate in the event that begins tonight at 6 at the Guertin.

"I think it's a great cause and it's going to be fun for the fans," said Fisher. "It's going to give the fans a chance to see a bunch of NHL players on the same ice for the first time in a while."

The tournament continues tomorrow and concludes Saturday, followed by an awards reception and celebrity poker tournament at the Centurion Hall on Colonnade Rd. in the evening.

The first 1,000 kids aged 16 and under wearing a hockey jersey receive free admission tonight.
