The Phoenix Coyotes are about to get more regional. Starting next season, the franchise will officially be known as the Arizona Coyotes, the team announced Wednesday.

With its arena located in Glendale, a city about 25 kilometres outside of Phoenix, the club felt it was time to pay homage to more than just the big city.

"Becoming the Arizona Coyotes makes sense for us since we play our games in Glendale and the city is such a great partner of ours," Coyotes owner Anthony LeBlanc said in a statement.

The franchise moved from Winnipeg to Phoenix in 1996, before moving to Glendale when a new arena was built in 2003.

The club's jerseys will remain untouched aside from adding a shoulder patch to both the home and away sweaters.
