With his contract up and the future of the Phoenix Coyotes in the air, head coach Dave Tippett decided to stick with the financially-troubled franchise.

The Coyotes signed their bench boss to a five-year contract extension Friday after reports indicated that Tippett had a done deal but was waiting to find out the team's fate in the Arizona desert.

"We are very pleased to agree to terms with Dave to a long-term contract extension," said Coyotes general manager Don Maloney. "Elite coaching is required to win on a consistent basis and Dave is one of the best at his job in today's game."

Tippett has an impressive 156-96-42 record in four seasons with the Coyotes, going all the way to the Western Conference final in 2012.

"I am thrilled to stay with the Coyotes," said Tippett. "Don has done a very good job of assembling a great staff and group of players here and I like the direction we are headed."
