GLENDALE, Ariz. -- The Phoenix Coyotes are switching affiliates in the American Hockey League, announcing a multi-year agreement with the Portland Pirates.
Portland had served as the AHL affiliate for Buffalo the past three seasons, but the Sabres announced a return to Rochester just last week. The Pirates, founded in 1993, had also been affiliated with the Anaheim Ducks and Washington Capitals.
"We are very pleased to announce our new AHL affiliation with the Portland Pirates," said Coyotes general manager Don Maloney. "[Portland owner] Brian Petrovek and the Pirates are a well-run, first class organization with a great history of success and we are looking forward to a strong and long-lasting partnership."
The Coyotes had partnered with San Antonio for the past four seasons.
Ray Edwards, who was the head coach with San Antonio, will take on the same responsibilities for Portland.
