PHOENIX — Georges Laraque has a hat-trick. So do Eric Boulton, Joe Corvo and Zdeno Chara. Dana Murzyn and Dave Schultz.
Theo Fleury scored three shorthanded goals in the same game once. Darryl Sittler scored two hat-tricks in the same game once.
But Shane Doan, Olympian and NHL All-Star, with 1,086 games and 710 points to his credit?
Never scored a hat-trick.
He’s come close 37 times, and 37 times he’s come up one snipe short.
“If there’s a record to have, the most two-goal games without a hat-trick isn’t a bad one,” said the Coyotes captain. “There are other records you wouldn’t want. If I had only one hat-trick it wouldn’t be a story, so I guess zero is better than one right now.”
Doan’s had three two-goal games this season, including back-to-back starts on Dec. 29 and 31. It would have been nice to get his first one on New Year’s Eve, but it wasn’t mean to be.
“You almost start to smile when you get two and there’s a little bit of time left,” he said. “I enjoy it. The fans here have been great; when I get two they get pretty excited.”
