NEW YORK - Stuck with only one goaltender Thursday when starter Ilya Bryzgalov came down with the flu, the Phoenix Coyotes turned to an unlikely place for another warm body.
They signed an amateur named Tom Fenton to backup Jason LaBarbera for their game against the New York Rangers, plucking him from obscurity and sitting him on the bench inside Madison Square Garden.
Who is Fenton? He's the head of game operations and community relations at Manhattanville College in Purchase, New York, and a former collegiate goalie at American International in Springfield, Massachusetts.
The Coyotes needed an emergency backup -- every NHL team is required to dress two goaltenders -- but didn't have enough time to recall anyone from their AHL team in San Antonio, Texas.
The story was unlikely to get any odder. Fenton won't see any ice time unless LaBarbera suffers a serious injury.
