TORONTO -- Phoenix captain Shane Doan was given a three-game suspension by the National Hockey League on Monday for his hit on Anaheim forward Dan Sexton in the Coyotes' 3-2 loss to the Ducks on Sunday.

Doan delivered a hit to the head of Sexton at 6:35 of the third period, but no penalty was issued.

"Doan delivered a late hit from the blind side to the head of an unsuspecting opponent," said NHL Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell. "While it was fortunate that Sexton did not suffer an injury, the message should be clear that this is the type of hit that we want out of our game."

Doan will be docked $73,387.11 in salary, which will go to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund. He will be eligible to return to the ice on Oct. 26 at Ottawa.
