GLENDALE, Ariz. -- As the man who unofficially handles ownership duties of the Coyotes, it made sense for Gary Bettman to join the Whiteout party.

A night after Glendale city council approved the lease of Jerry Reinsdorf to buy the team from the NHL, the commissioner was at Jobing.com Arena.

While Bettman said he was planning to be here, he said the vote is a positive move to final resolve the ownership crisis.

“We’re going to have to approve the final transaction, but I don’t anticipate any problems as (Reinsdorf) is someone well known to the other (NHL) owners,” Bettman said. “There is obviously some more work to be done, we’re not there yet. But our hope and expectation is that all those things that need to get done will get done.”

Apple opportunity

Bettman rejected concerns that the Reinsdorf group may have a loophole in the lease to relocate the franchise if business is still suffering after five years.

“Five years is an ample opportunity for this franchise to be run the right way and for the market to demonstrate on an ongoing basis its support for hockey and this franchise,” Bettman said.
