OTTAWA - The Senators will get a "hometown discount" if they buy what should be the best years of Marc Methot's career.

And if they do hand him a contract extension sometime soon, they should also seriously consider making him the new captain.

No disrespect to the current assistants, long-serving Senators Chris Phillips and Chris Neil, but the 'C' needs to find a permanent sweater now for a few seasons. Phillips is 36 and, given Ottawa's wealth of young defenceman, will almost certainly be moving on when his deal expires in the summer of 2016. That too is when Neil's contract is up and, at 35 and having logged a lot of hard miles, he is also likely on his last.

Methot recently turned 29 and the only reason he isn't now the best candidate to replace Jason Spezza, as far as we can tell, is that he could be an unrestricted free agent in a little over 10 months.
