THE DEMOTION

As the second pick overall in the 2001 entry draft and someone billed as “The Next One” even before he was a scoring star in junior, Spezza was naturally anxious to start his NHL career soon after he came to Ottawa in one of the most lopsided trades (Spezza, Zdeno Chara and Bill Muckalt for Alexei Yashin) in league history.

But then-coach Jacques Martin inadvertently added a little insult to heartbreak when he sent Spezza to Binghamton with the explanation to the media that the NHL “is a man’s league” and the young centre still had some maturing to do.
