You have to wonder why it has come to this.

Why only one year into his role as captain would Jason Spezza, after getting the job he so badly wanted, welcome a move to a new team with only one year to unrestricted free agency?

The news the Senators are shopping Spezza is no surprise. The sticker shock wore off a week after the season when the Sun reported he'll likely be gone by the draft in Philadelphia.

So, what happened?

This has likely been building for a long time. After getting to the second round last spring, the Senators treaded water this year, missed the playoffs and the finger was pointed at Spezza.

Taking over for departed captain Daniel Alfredsson, Spezza had big shoes to fill but he could not have imagined this season would go as badly as it did, especially after the club dealt for Bobby Ryan.
