OTTAWA - Clarke MacArthur held a mirror up to himself and his entire team Wednesday.

It wasn't a pretty sight, either.

With only 14 games left and the club's playoff hopes fading faster than one of owner Eugene Melnyk's claimers coming down the stretch, the Senators winger took dead aim at the club's issues.

MacArthur didn't mince words and put the blame at the feet of the club's effort and made the stunning admission the Senators don't compete hard enough

"We put ourselves here. You can't look outside of this room," said MacArthur following a skate at Canadian Tire Centre. "We've set the stones here for the path we're on and if we don't want to compete this is what's going to happen.

"It's a good lesson for this team and all of us in here. The compete level has to go way up."

MacArthur said the Senators have nobody to blame but themselves for the predicament they are in. This won't change until the players start battling harder for 60 minutes.

"It's the professionalism for one: I think it honestly just comes down to competing," he admitted. "We're lackadaisical on some plays. One thing leads to the next and when it rains it pours.
