OTTAWA - The Senators return from the holiday break Friday and they can only hope Santa delivered what it takes to make the playoffs under the Christmas tree.

As they prepare to hit the halfway mark of the schedule with back-to-back games against the Boston Bruins Friday at the TD Garden and Saturday at home, the Senators aren't sitting where anybody expected.

After an improbable run to the second round of the playoffs last spring, the Senators were expected to be better but going into the three-day Christmas break they were sitting four points out of a playoff spot.

No one is happy.
