Senators pay respects to Alfredsson despite bitter parting

OTTAWA -- It was 18 years condensed into about two minutes and 45 seconds.

It is an impossible thing, of course, to take what a man, an athlete, grows to mean to a community over the better part of two decades and reduce it to a series of images. Even in high definition on an expansive screen in the building where he won the respect of most of those fans, what a player meant to a franchise and a city is difficult to put into complete focus.

All you need to know is this: the Senators before Daniel Alfredsson arrived in Ottawa in 1995 were a pathetic expansion franchise in search of a face, an identity.

Alfredsson gave them that, becoming the constant in the evolution from hopeless to hopeful.
