Jason Spezza had to flex his muscle as captain for the first time Monday.
In the wake of the club’s 5-2 loss to the San Jose Sharks Sunday, Spezza called a “players only” meeting so the Senators could try to find solutions with a matchup against the defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks set for Tuesday at the United Center.
“It’s important to have a group discussion,” said Spezza. “It’s no secret we’re not happy with how we’re playing. The worst thing you can do is let things keep going the same way without discussing things and keep coming to the rink and not playing the way you want to play.
“We felt it was important to talk amongst ourselves and the things can get aired out a bit better when it’s just the group.”
