TORONTO - The Maple Leafs overcame a lot of setbacks on Saturday, including the home opener curse of the Senators.

On the sixth try a Battle of Ontario has been fought on the first night of the ACC schedule, it was the Leafs finally winning, in a 5-4 shootout.

With almost 80 shots in regulation and overtime, the Leafs had a power play for the final 42 seconds after Jarred Cowen hauled down Dave Bolland on a breakway, seconds after a Nazem Kadri mugging in the same circumstance was not called. But the Leafs over-played their hand on the 4-on-3, trying for a fancy goal. But Mason Raymond and Tyler Bozak scored, while reliever Jonathan Bernier did the rest.
