OTTAWA - First, Erik Karlsson smiled for the camera as part of the team picture Friday at Scotiabank Place. Then, he wore an even wider grin as he stepped on the ice for practice.

The Senators’ players tapped their sticks as their all-star defenceman skated out to take part in drills with his teammates for the first time since he had his Achillies tendon sliced by the blade of Pittsburgh Penguins’ winger Matt Cooke.

No, Karlsson won’t play Saturday against the Toronto Maple Leafs in the Battle of Ontario, but nobody should rule out a return next weekend against either the Philadelphia Flyers Saturday or the Boston Bruins Sunday.

Though the prognosis was 4-6 months for Karlsson's return from injury Feb. 13 in Pittsburgh, the Senators haven't ruled out the possibility of him returning for the playoffs after doctors cleared him for contact Thursday.
