TORONTO -- This one hit close to home for Sergei Gonchar.

A meteorite that scientists estimated weighed 10 tonnes fell in the Chelyabinsk region of the Ural mountains of Russia -- where the Senators defenceman was born.

Gonchar, 38, who makes his off-season home in Florida, still has family in the region where more than 500 people were estimated to be injured by the blast. He got a call from his sister to assure him that her and his mother were OK.

The blast happened at 9:20 a.m. local time and Gonchar spoke with his family before practice Friday at Scotiabank Place.
