OTTAWA - When a lockout wiped out the 2004-05 NHL season, a 32-year-old Daniel Alfredsson went back to Europe with the purpose of playing competitive, winning hockey.
He signed with the Frolunda Indians in the Swedish Elite League, the team in his hometown of Gothenburg and one with which he played three seasons prior to joining the Senators in 1995.
Alfredsson played 15 regular-season games with Frolunda, scoring eight goals and nine assists. In the playoffs, he had a team-high 18 points in 14 games and led the Indians to the title they was unable to win when he was playing for them in his early 20s.
“That’s a year I’ll always remember,” Alfredsson said Wednesday at Carleton University after his third practice in a row with the Ravens. “I was fortunate to be on a great team, and I played some of my best hockey I’ve ever played.”
