Senators winger Milan Michalek has surgery

OTTAWA - Even if training camp opened as scheduled Saturday, the Senators would be without winger Milan Michalek.
As the Ottawa Sun reported first Monday, the Senators confirmed the high-scoring winger suffered an abdominal injury during training last month in Montreal that required surgery and he’s scheduled to be on the shelf 4-to-6 weeks.
The 27-year-old Michalek, who had 35 goals and 25 assists for 60 points in 77 games last season, certainly wouldn’t have been ready for the start of camp Friday at Scotiabank Place and the season opener Oct. 11 is doubtful.
All this means Michalek is the only player on the Senators roster who isn’t officially locked out by the NHL. If he isn’t healthy by the time the season is supposed to start, he’ll receive his $4.5-million salary until he’s cleared for play.
Under the lockout rules, Michalek is allowed to go the rink every day and get treatment for his injury. He can also use the facilities to work out. It’s believed he is the only Ottawa player allowed in the rink.
Michalek’s agent, Allan Walsh, directed all inquiries on his client’s status to the team. The Senators said in a statement Michalek had the procedure last Tuesday in Philadelphia and is scheduled to make a full recovery.
