DETROIT -- It will be on with the show for Senators Friday night at the Joe Louis Arena.
Rookie David Rundblad and newly-acquired centre Zenon Konopka, who has been troubled by a back issue through training camp, will be scratched as the Senators open the season against the Detroit Red Wings.
That means Brian Lee and Stephane Da Costa will both dress against the Wings. The Senators will head to Toronto right after the game for Round 1 of the Battle of Ontario - Saturday at the Air Canada Centre. Expect to see Konopka play there.
“You want to play in the game. I played 82 games last year. My back was an issue during camp and they were straight up with me. They didn’t think it was the best thing for me to play back-to-back,” said Kenopka Friday. “It’s something that you’ve got to respect. You don’t want to agree every decision as a player, but it’s not your job to make a decision. I’m excited for the team. We’ve just got to steal two points out of here”
The Wings want to jump on Ottawa early.
“You have to put pressure on them and get on their (defence),” said captain Nicklas Lidstrom. “They can be a team that could play loose as well. They’ve got a lot of skill in the back end and up front.
“If you don’t get pressure on them, they can make plays. We have to play solid in our own zone.”
The Wings will scratch former Senators winger Patrick Eaves and newcomer Fabian Brunnstrom. Craig Anderson will start in net for Ottawa.
