Winchester could miss camp
BRUCE GARRIOCH, QMI Agency
OTTAWA - It didn’t take long for the injury bug to bite.
While D Matt Carkner wasn’t on the ice because he suffered an injury in training, the Senators could be without C Jesse Winchester for a while after he suffered an injury when he crashed into the boards doing a drill.
Sources say Winchester suffered a shoulder injury and could miss the rest of camp. That determination won’t be firmed up until Sunday.
Winchester was hurt Saturday when he went to hit Nick Foligno, missed and went into the boards hard. He got up left the ice after about a minute.
As for Carkner, he’s expected to skate Sunday.
“He has a boo-boo,” said coach Paul MacLean.
NOT ENOUGH TIME
Daniel Alfredsson doesn’t like a shortened training camp.
While the Senators’ 38-year-old captain has enough of these under his belt and would probably be fine without it, he didn’t mind the “old days” when teams actually had four or five practices before playing their first exhibition games.
The Senators won’t have a lot of time to get their act together after opening camp Saturday at the Bell Sensplex. They’ll travel to Toronto Monday for their first exhibition game against the Maple Leafs.
“It’s hard. I’m not a fan of it,” said Alfredsson. “The shorter camps are OK, but I think there should be four or five practices before the first exhibition game so that teams can get into contact and practice together. It’s the same for everybody.”
THIS ’N’ THAT
G Craig Anderson said he’s discussed the pre-season schedule with goalie coach Rick Walmsley. “I’m a team player. I’ll play as many as they need, but we’ve discussed what I need to get ready,” said Anderson. “Whether that’s four or five games, I don’t know. I know they’ve got some young goalies they want to get into games. Obviously, the games at the end (of the pre-season) are the ones that you want to be in to get ready.” ... Alfredsson said he expects to suit up for three exhibition games and possibly more ... Milan Michalek scored the OT winner to give Team Kyte a 3-2 victory over Team Marsh in the scrimmage.
