It was a rare Saturday off for the Senators.

This is how 20-year-old all-star defenceman Erik Karlsson planned on spending it:

“Me and my girlfriend are going to take our dog to the vet,” said Karlsson. “I don’t know what he’s going to do there, but something.

“Then we’re going to go downtown, and we’re going to get my hair fixed up a bit. Not cutting it off, just keeping it in shape. Same style, but it’s getting a bit torn and stuff.

“Then we’re going to be downtown for a bit, walk around, have lunch down there probably.

“We’re going to have dinner at home, then probably go to a movie or something.”

Is there something in particular you want to see?

“Whatever she picks, probably.”

Is there something wrong with your dog?

“No, no. It’s just a check-up. It’s not our dog. We’re just fostering it. It’s like a street dog. A Shih Tzu. We’re looking after it until we find someone who wants it.

“We want to keep it, but it’s tough travelling with it. It’s a lot of responsibility, to have a dog.”
