Rating the Fisher trade

The Senators have decided to get younger.

The Senators sent popular centre Mike Fisher to the Predators for a first-round pick in June and a conditional pick in 2012, which means Ottawa is likely to wind up with a high draft choice with its own pick.

The decision to send Fisher packing won’t be a popular one around Ottawa, and it raised eyebrows across the NHL.

Some NHL insiders felt the Senators should have at least tried to get an established prospect in return for Fisher.

“I was surprised. I thought they should have got a player back,” said a league executive. “The picks are fine, but who is going to play for them next year? This just signals that they’re trying to cut cash and they’re going to go young.”

RATING: Undecided. Depends what the Senators do with the No. 1 pick. Do they turn it into immediate help at the draft?
