The Ottawa Senators knew change was coming. But the magnitude of general manager Bryan Murray's first deal -- trading Mike Fisher to Nashville -- certainly got their attention on Thursday.

Winger Nick Foligno might have said it best after he and his subdued teammates left the ice following a practice today in Calgary:

"If they can trade away a fan favorite, a team favorite, I think it sends a message that no one's safe," he observed.

Fellow winger Chris Neil has been one of Fisher's closest friends on the team. He was visibly upset, speaking with watery eyes and a trembling voice, but also realistic.

"Obviously you don't like to see anyone go, but the way we've played this year, I think it ties Bryan's hands," Neil said as the players prepared to board a flight for Edmonton, where Ottawa meets the Oilers in a Hockey Day in Canada game on Saturday. "Obviously Mike's a character guy, a guy that's hard to replace, he's a guy that teams want. You can't say enough about him."

Jason Spezza has just rejoined the team after being out with an injury. He noted that a little piece of the team's heart has gone with Fisher.

"I think everybody was a little bit shocked. We knew stuff would come, but Fish is a guy that's been here a long time. A heart and soul guy of the team," he said. "It's always tough when you lose a friend but we expected for some things to happen."

As for his own future, Spezza said Murray has not talked with him about, possibly, waiving his no-trade clause.

"I want to be part of the solution," said Spezza.

Captain Daniel Alfredsson sat beside Fisher in the Ottawa dressing room for many years.

"Getting rid of Mike is hard, especially for us that's been around him for a long time. He's done a lot for the team and for the community."
