To say the Senators are excited about the development of David Rundblad is putting it mildly.

The organization believes the 6-foot-2, 190-pound 20-year-old that GM Bryan Murray acquired for the Senators’ first-round pick in the 2010 draft is currently the best defenceman in the Swedish Elite league.

Rundblad, who has six goals and 17 assists in 30 games for Skelleftea HC, is being viewed as an important member of next season’s Senators.

How important?

How about on one of their top two pairings, unless they sign or trade for another big-name veteran.

Top 4 guy?

“David has a chance to be a Top 4 guy,” Murray said Wednesday. “He’s a high-end guy. Anybody and everybody I’ve talked to, not only on our own staff, they all feel he’s the best defenceman certainly in Sweden.”

Of this season’s Top 4 blue liners in Ottawa, only Chris Phillips does not have a contract for 2010-11. Of course, it’s possible Murray could also find a trading partner to take Sergei Gonchar and/or Filip Kuba.

Erik Karlsson is considered a star of the future for the Senators.
