PHILADELPHIA - The Senators will be coming home early from their week-long road trip to deal with a tragedy in their midst.
Club officials confirmed Monday the Senators will return to Ottawa after facing the Philadelphia Flyers to attend The Celebration of Life for 14-year-old Daron Richardson Wednesday at Scotiabank Place.
The daughter of Senators assistant coach Luke Richardson died tragically Saturday night in hospital. The management, coaching staff and players want to be there to support the Richardson family at this difficult time.
The Senators were scheduled to fly to Raleigh Monday night and practice at the RBC Center Tuesday. The players will now skate at Scotiabank Place, attend the service and then fly to Raleigh Wednesday afternoon to continue this four-game road trip against the Hurricanes that night.
Teams are required to be in the opposing city the night before the game. The Senators would have had to receive permission from the NHL's office but it wouldn't have been an issue.
The Senators face the Flyers Monday at the Wells Fargo Center. Game time is 7 p.m.
