Jason Spezza is going to stay on the shelf.

The Senators centre, a late scratch with a groin injury that has hampered him since the end of training camp, wont be in the lineup Saturday against the Montreal Canadiens at Scotiabank Place.

Centre Zack Smith has been recalled from the clubs AHL affiliate in Binghamton and he will suit up against the Habs. Spezza didnt suit up for Fridays 4-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres at the HSBC Arena.

Coach Cory Clouston said Spezza wont be out long-term.

Were going to sit him until hes 100% confident and able to play at the top of his game, said Clouston Saturday morning. We have to trust that he knows his body and that hes talked to the doctors and the trainers. When he goes in, its not going to be at 70% or 60%, its going to be 95 or 100%.

Goalie Brian Elliott, who made 20 saves in the final period, will make the start in the Ottawa net. Clouston said the club has to build off the way it played in the first two periods against the Sabres.

The Senators were able to dictate the play. That was the key.

We were playing not to lose in the third, said Clouston. When I look back at the video, the shots look like it was a really lopsided period, because we didnt press enough or push the puck up the ice enough.

But, defensively knowing that we won the game, I dont mind the fact that we had a little adversity, that we bent and didnt break. We gained some confidence off that as well.
