OTTAWA - Senators defenceman Filip Kuba has a broken right leg and will miss a minimum of five to six weeks, GM Bryan Murray said Sunday morning.

Kuba caught his foot in a rut in the ice Saturday, the first day of training camp. Murray said it looks like the break is clean and that surgery will not be required, but added that Kuba will be re-evaluated Thursday.

"We're real disappointed for Filip, he looked great in the couple of days I came over to watch him skate," Murray said of the veteran top four blue liner, who last April had back surgery that prematurely ended his 2009-10 campaign. "I know that he's really frustrated that that would happen. I guess if it's going to happen, it's better to happen early ... then come back and have a great year. It does open the door for one of the kids to get more ice time, in particular in pre-season, and somebody hopefully will emerge and be a good player for us."

Chris Campoli and Brian Lee would be the likely candidates to have the best shot at more minutes in the wake of the injury.
