OTTAWA - The Senators all showed up healthy, happy and ready to go as training camp opened Friday.

The 50 players who completed their medicals at Scotiabank Place are all in shape -- and they'll find out just how good their fitness levels are when on-ice workouts begin Saturday under the watchful eye of coach Cory Clouston.

No health issues were uncovered with the players who reported for camp, but Alexei Kovalev, Daniel Alfredsson, Filip Kuba and Milan Michalek will all be held out of early exhibition games because they’re recovering form off-season surgery.

“Realistically, there might be one or two and I don’t think we’re any different than most teams,” said Clouston moments ago. “We’ve had opportunities to bring guys in on tryouts, but we know that it’s not necessarily fair to bring them in when we just don’t (have) that money to spend.”

The Senators hit the ice Saturday at 10 a.m. There is one spot open up front and there could be a position on the blueline if youngster Jared Cowen or Patrick Wiercioch show the ability in camp to push for a spot.
